The first public auction of connemara ponies under the auspices of the British Conemara Pony Society was held at Three Counties Showground, Malvern, by Brightwells.
Henrietta Knight was one of the prime movers and shakers of the idea, and she was on a small committee with Sara Hodgkins and Peter Fitzsimmons, and together with the auctioneers a very professional sale was held.
Henrietta herself was one of the main beneficiaries selling Loughconeera Gaoth Anoir, an 11 year old mare in foal to her stallion, for £5600. She was bred by Josie Sullivan in southern Galway, and whose family bred, and exhibited, Loughconeera, the 1940 winner at the Carna Show (forerunner of Clifden), and great, great grand dam of our own premium mare Bardsey Trinket. Trinket in turn is the dam of the 2009 Breed Show champion at Moreton Morrell, Eastlands Dunrose, and of Eastlands Burniebrae champion at Royal Dublin 2005, and of the BCPS Northern Show 2009. I hope her purchasers have the same success with Loughconeera ponies as we have had.
The Irish sent many ponies over, Michael Igoe having 20+ entered. None of his ponies had been sold when the final lot of his consignment entered the ring in the form of Frederiksminde Monarch a grey 5 year old stallion. His persistence paid off and cheers went up as he received the top price of the day at £6000.
Of the ponies present that caught my eye was the bay Haselor Mercury consigned by Mrs. Carole Ireland, who was bid to £1800.
Mrs T. Cunningham Cade had a part bred 15.1hh named Cuinnegan Steady Eddie and he obtained the sum of £4500. This lot really caught my eye, and he was beautifully produced by Albie stud, and I shall watch his progress with interest.
The British ponies did appear to attract the attention of the buyers, but many breeders who were present, and who had always had reservations about an auction sale, were unconvinced, and preferred the private sale system that is the norm for connemara ponies in this country.
On a personal level a large party had travelled in excess of 300 miles to escape the 2009 northern summer when 15” rain was recorded during August, and we thoroughly enjoyed our two days respite. We can recommend the Swan at Swan Hadley a short distance from the showground. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the food was the best we have enjoyed for many years, and it was reasonably priced too!

Frederiksminde Monach £6000.

Loughconeera Gaoth Anoir £5600

Cuinnegan Steady Eddie £4500

It was with great pleasure that we we watched young Alice Tomlinson pilot Birchmoor Admiral into qualifying position in a strong class for a visit to HOYS. Admiral is by Eastlands Midnight Again (one of our ex driving four in hand team) and out of an old favourite Eastlands Admiration. It was a good victory for far below her in the class was the Royal Highland Champion shetland Waukmill Good Gracious. Alice will have our gang supporting her at Hoys!!!
Another of our ponies Eastlands Wild Orchid (Lockinge Frederick-Hallfields White Orchid) belonging to Mr and Mrs. R. Williams was second in the 2 year old filly class, at The BCPS Northern Show.

News of Fred's family - 8th August 2009

Eastlands Loch Tam - his first grandson!
Has been with Alison Grainger since very young, and is competing in Open ridden classes, winning his fair share. He is a real pleasure pony, and they enjoy a great partnership. He has a lovely country home with freedom to hack out in forestry.

From Alison Baird. She purchased Kirtle Taragon by Fred in the Spring of this year.
He has now settled into his new home, and has won two 1st's in ridden classes. "Wonderful temperament ridden by Fred (8) Olivia (11) Susanna (her daughter,) and Ailson, not all at once!" Another pony settled in a family home.

We had a great crop of hay, cut on 5th August, and baled late on 7th. Half of it is now under cover, and the rest very wet. We use plastic netting, and it is supposed to turn 2" of rain on a daily basis. It is being tested!

News from Ireland
The Royal Dublin Horse show reduced the in-hand classes, and then amalgamated them due to shortage of entries. No doubt the 253 euro entry fee (including stable) had something to do with it. In addition you have a large fee to park your horsebox: in our case, 300 euros.
Shame - is it going the same way as our Royal Show?

The British Connemara Pony Society's In-hand Show at Moreton Morrell, 18th July 2009.
This was held on a Saturday for the first time, and beautiful weather for showing and spectators. I think the experiment worked!
Results:
Supreme champion - Eastlands Dunrose.

Tam O' Shanter Champion - Eastylands Dunrose. Many thanks are due to Carole Prentice and Michael Sharpley for sponsoring this excellent competition.

Champion gelding - Eastlands Haydn - Miss Amy Smith. (Lockinge Frederick-Gowy Madrigal)

Our Stud stallion Lockinge Frederick, who we have stood at stud for 19 years had a really successful show, but owing to his age and that of his owners is now used exclusively at Eastlands.
We have a younger model in the form of Eastlands Harleybrae, full brother to the above junior champion.

"I think it is a bit rough having to share by food with a hen and a dog, after returning from my first championship win"! Mossiebrae
The younger generation are making their debut.
We were thrilled with the debut of Moss Bross (Eastlands Mossiebrae) a daughter of Rosenaharley Laughris, and our own Eastlands Burniebrae. She had her first night in a stable; first time on a lorry; and first time in a show ring. A very big ask, and to finish second in a strong class gives us hope for her future.

Harleybrae - brother to Mossiebrae, our young stallion, who might well come out this year, as he has coverd only two mares.

The “New” year of 2009 has had a difficult start!!! At the end of March a ceiling in the older part of our house collapsed causing great amount of debris and dust everywhere. John described in a as the worst day of his life, but it is only 24 hours, and so we have used this time to do to do some improvements as well. So forgive us – the telephone is often out; electricity off, and it is generally time consuming.
At the end of March the colt we bred “Eastlands Ashiebrae” (Lockinge Frederick-Bardsey Trinket) appeared at the stallion parade at Clifden. Of course, we were in the run up to lambing, and the weather was awful, so did not see it.

Stands with the Keaney Family, Gowla, Cashel, Co. Galway, Eire.
Full Brother to Breed Show Supreme Champions 2009 Eastlands Dunrose, and the Northern Breed Champion Eastlands Burniebrae champion Royal Dublin 2005.
On the 28th April, we took two colts to the BCPS inspections. One is for a friend, and the other for us. Both passed as Class 1.
Eastlands Hermes is by Lockinge Frederick and out of Bardsey Chalice. He is a full brother to the stallion Eastlands Terry who stands in Cumbria.

The second colt was Eastlands Harleybrae. He entertained everyone as a foal at the breed show two years back, but has grown up to be very laid back. Harleybrae is a son of the Dublin Champion Eastlands Burniebrae and Glendwood International’s stallion Rosenaharley Laughris, and he gained a welcome 7 points for his parents towards their premium.

We have not as many foals this year, and start foaling in the third week in May. Eastlands Molly TB is due a partbred to Fred. Gowy Madrigal and Bardsey Trinket are the only mares left from Fred’s original harem and we await their foals. Burniebrae is again, and surprisingly, due to Rosenaharley Laughris by AI. We say surprisingly because scans showed her barren!
